BUDDY POPPY PROGRAM
The Buddy Poppy is the VFW's official memorial flower and a nationally recognized symbol of remembrance for the men and women who have given their lives in service to our country. Through the annual Buddy Poppy campaign, VFW members distribute poppies in exchange for voluntary donations that directly support veterans, active-duty service members, and local veteran assistance programs while honoring the sacrifices of those who served.
Our next poppy drive is:
November 7-8, 2026 (Shadow Lake Hy-Vee, Papillion NE).
YOUTH & COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Sarpy County VFW Post 9675 is committed to strengthening our community by investing in future generations and honoring the legacy of those who served before us. We are proud to be the chartered organization for Scouting America Pack 60 and Troop 60, supporting youth as they develop leadership skills, character, citizenship, and a lifelong commitment to service.
Our dedication to the community also includes the care and stewardship of our local La Platte Cemetery, helping preserve a place of honor and remembrance for those who have served our nation. Through these partnerships and community initiatives, Post 9675 continues its mission of service beyond our membership, ensuring that the values of patriotism, volunteerism, and civic responsibility endure for generations to come.
AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS
PATRIOT'S PEN
The VFW's Patriot's Pen essay competition encourages students in grades 6–8 to explore the meaning of patriotism through the written word. Each year, participants submit an original essay based on an annual patriotic theme for the opportunity to earn a share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards while developing a deeper appreciation for America's history, values, and freedoms.
The 2026-27 theme is: “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY
Since 1947, the VFW's Voice of Democracy scholarship program has inspired high school students to reflect on patriotism, democracy, and the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Each year, students compete by writing and recording an original audio essay based on an annual patriotic theme, with the opportunity to earn a share of more than $2 million in scholarships and awards.
The 2026-27 theme is: “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”

TEACHER OF THE YEAR
The VFW's Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award recognizes outstanding educators who inspire students to become informed, engaged, and patriotic citizens. Open to teachers in elementary (K–5), middle school (6–8), and high school (9–12), the program honors those who promote American history, civic responsibility, and a deep appreciation for our nation's freedoms through exceptional classroom instruction.

SCOUT OF THE YEAR
The VFW's Scout of the Year program recognizes exceptional youth who exemplify leadership, citizenship, patriotism, and service to their communities. The program is open to eligible members of Scouting America (including Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Exploring), Girl Scouts of the USA, Trail Life USA, American Heritage Girls, and other nationally recognized scouting organizations. By honoring outstanding Scouts, the VFW encourages the next generation to embrace the values of service, character, and commitment to their communities and country.
PUBLIC SERVANT AWARDS
The VFW's Public Servant Awards recognize the extraordinary dedication of the first responders who serve and protect our communities every day. Through this program, VFW Posts honor outstanding Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals, firefighters, and law enforcement officers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, professional excellence, courage, and commitment to public service. By recognizing these everyday heroes, the VFW strengthens the partnership between veterans and those who continue to answer the call to serve.
