From the Good Life to the Biggest Little City

Every summer, thousands of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Auxiliary members from across the nation gather for the annual VFW National Convention to celebrate accomplishments, conduct the business of the organization, and shape the future of veteran advocacy. This year, the adventure took us to Reno, Nevada—where the Nebraska delegation proudly represented the Cornhusker State.

Representing VFW Sarpy County Post 9675 was Commander Sarah Lively, joining fellow Nebraska VFW and Auxiliary members for a week of committee meetings, business sessions, networking, camaraderie, and enough walking to make everyone question whether they accidentally signed up for a marathon instead of a convention.

The highlight for this past year came when VFW Post 9675 was recognized with both All-State and the prestigious All-American designation. These honors recognize posts that demonstrate excellence in membership growth, community service, youth programs, veteran advocacy, and overall performance. While the awards were accepted in Reno, they represent the hard work, dedication, and volunteer spirit of every member, Auxiliary member, and supporter who helps advance our mission throughout the year.

Of course, no National Convention would be complete without discovering that every meeting is somehow in the ballroom farthest from your last meeting, surviving on coffee and convention-center snacks, and collecting enough pins and handouts to make your suitcase question its life choices. Fortunately, the friendships formed, ideas exchanged, and stories shared with veterans from across the country make every step worthwhile.

Beyond the celebration, this is an exciting time to be a member of the VFW. Across the nation, our organization continues to be a leading voice for veterans by fighting for meaningful legislative change. Whether it is protecting veterans from predatory "claim sharks" that charge excessive fees for assistance with earned VA benefits or advocating for long-overdue legislation like the Major Richard Star Act, the VFW continues to ensure that veterans' voices are heard where it matters most—on Capitol Hill.

National Convention is a reminder that every Post, regardless of size, has a voice. When thousands of members come together with a shared purpose, that voice becomes a powerful force for positive change. The awards we bring home are certainly worth celebrating, but they are only one measure of success. The true measure is the difference we make in the lives of veterans, service members, their families, and our local communities every single day.

The Nebraska delegation represented our state with pride, and Post 9675 was honored to stand among the nation's top-performing posts. Bringing home both All-State and All-American recognition is a milestone we celebrate together, but the real work begins once we return home.

Thank you to every member, Auxiliary member, volunteer, and community partner who makes these achievements possible. Because of your commitment, Post 9675 continues to demonstrate that even a local post from Sarpy County can make a national impact.
